AMD K6-III/400 losing time

by jeremy gamble . Updated 25 years, 10 months ago

I built a computer with an AMD K6-III/400 processor, 128 MB RAM, Epox motherboard, Riva TNT 16 MB AGP graphics card, SoundBlaster Live! sound card, 1 Kensington NIC, and another NIC that I can’t currently remember the brand (For DSL Inet sharing), and other miscellaneous hardware. The problem is that anytime the computer is on, it will completely lock up for a split second, at random intervals, affecting everything on the system, including the system clock. After about a week of the computer being on 24/7 (except for about two days in the middle when I was getting fed up with all of my attempts to fix it producing no results), I have lost nearly two hours of time from my system clock.

Oddly, it does not lose any time when the computer is turned off. I left the computer off for about the same amount of time directly after I reset the clock, and it didn’t lose a second of time (as far as I could tell). However, it doesn’t “reset” the clock when I reboot. It’s as if the time isexactly where it should be, even at 2 hours behind “real” time.

I have made sure that I have shut down all unnecessary TSR’s, scanned and defragged the drive, I’ve even gone so far as to delete the Windows swap file. My conclusion is that the problem must be hardware related, but I am open to any suggestions for a resolution. Thank you for your time and your response.
