are Messenger programs compatible?

silly beginner question here … but are most Messenger programs compatible so I don’t need to have different ones? I am so new at this …
Currently I have Yahoo Messenger, Windows Messenger and Google Talk or Chat is set up in my gMail account. Is this all compatible and could/should I just be using one of them and would any contact who works in one of them work in any of the others?
