I recently purchased an Asus P3V4X Apollo Pro133A Slot 1 Motherboard and I am having trouble setting it up. I originally had everything fully assembled, but since Windows 98 has issues with booting from a SCSI hard drive, I decided to rebuild the machine with an IDE drive.
At first, the machine would fully load the OS and it wasn’t until I’d get into Windows that it would lock up. The keyboard and mouse would stop working. Every once in a while, if I would continuosly press the keyboard or click the mouse buttons, they would start working again, but I would always hear that annoying clicking sound as if the buffer is flooded. I would hear this sound sometimes even when the machine wasn’t frozen.
Now, when I boot up, I get the “keyboard error or no keyboard detected” prompt telling me to hit “del” to enter setup or hit “F1” to continue. Since the motherboard isn’t recognizing the PS/2 keyboard, hitting either of these two keys doesn’t do anything. While at this prompt, I can unplug the keyboard and plug it back in and the 3 lights on it temporarily light up, but it still doesn’t work. If I position the connector just right, I can reproduce the clicking sound that I used to hear while in Windows when it was locked up.
When I could boot into Windows, there were no errors in the device manager and I have checked all of the jumpers. They are all set up properly. At this point, should I assume that the motherboard is bad or is there something that I should check first?
Any ideas?
