batch files within windows 2000

Brick wall batch file. I am in need of a DOS expert. I am running into a brick wall writing a batch file which calls two windows applications. The problem is after the batch file hits the first application, it will not continue until I close that1st application being called. Is their a way around this? Please advise. Thank you.
