Beginner Programmer

I am trying to learn java 2 I am having trouble inserting applet code, and actually making it do what it is supposed to do. I type the code in exactly as shown. But when I access it, I get no results. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to load a compilier? If so, where can I find it? What is it called?, etc.
