I have old pc w/AST Motherboard 486DX-2 Win95b. Computer boots saying “there is a problem with cache memory-computer needs service”. Computer was used for playing solitary only and nothing had ‘changed’. The computer stops at 1/2 Windows logo on bottom half of screen.
I did the following:
Used POST card that stopped at error 00 (can’t find operating system or trouble with hard drive)
Used Microscope diagnostics software at boot. It confirms Cache memory failed but also says base memory andextended memory failed> i assume base & extended memory if found on the simms and cache is found on memory chip on motherboard??
I then tested the simms with RAMCHECK (memory testing device) which PASSED the memory tests)
I then:
Changed the Monitor
Changed simm memory modules
Changed 486 Chip
(all with “known good”)
and get the same error & screen freeze at bootup
I think there must be an L2 cache chip or memory controller chip on motherboard that is bad and the motherboard needs to be replaced to solve the problem. Any suggestions on this puzzling problem? Am i correct in my thinking or is there more i can do to diagnose the problem? I humbly await your help. Susan
