can I Run 32 but apps and win XP sp2 in AMD turon 64 x2 processor

Hi all,
does the 64 mean that we can run specifically written software for 64bit platforms as well as any 32bit OS and other software?
And when I want to update virus guard or something do I have to have the 64 bit version of the update?
