Can I use my smart phone to substitute for an air card?

Seems like I should be able to use my smart phone (BlackBerry) to perform the same function as an air card. Both essentially provide a wireless network connection through my provider. Is there any device, adapter or app that would allow me to do this and avoid charges for both services?
