Can WGet be used as a full alternative to Microsoft Update?

by alxcsby . Updated 15 years, 2 months ago

A while back, I got tired of cleaning up damage on my PC from mismanaged Shavlik patch-pushing. It’s a long story, but the ultimate result is:
1. I’m not being patched by Shavlik.
2. I like manually handling my updates, as opposed to Automatic Updates.
3. I hate little bubbles bugging me about things being ready to install.
4. I cannot access Microsoft Updates if I’ve turned off the Automatic Updates service.

I’ve a sense that wget could be used to download all necessary updates, but I’m not certain where to point it. I want to avoid things like ctupdate that require the use of an .iso.
I realize the whole issue is being caused by my being picky, but now it’s something of a personal crusade. I’m on XP SP3.
