Can you help me in relation to Nokia E71 email notifications?

I just purchased a Nokia E71 (international version, QWERTZ keyboard) and new email notifications do not appear at the bottom of the display, I have to check my set up Hotmail inbox manually to see new mails. Not nice!! Do I need to download any specific software to get this? Thank you
