Cannot display this video mode

I am running Windows ME on an older desktop computer. I leave the computer on overnight with all applications closed. Lately, when I come in in the morning, I have a black screen with the message “Cannot display this video mode”. I then have to reboot the system numerous times to get back to my Windows login. The system is an inexpensive clone with onboard video. I am wondering what the most likely source of the problem is.
