can’t turn off auto update in XP Pro

I’m logged in as the systsem’s administrator, but when I go to Automatic Updates menu the options are frozen and I’m not allowed access to turn off the updates. The “automatic download but manual install” option is checked, and every day I’m being bombarded with windows update trying to download SP2, which I do not want! Is there anything I can do? Any response is very much appreciated.
