Computer locking up each time I boot

Sometimes windows boots completely sometimes it locks up on the screen that says something about your settings. One of the first screens (xp).
This is much worse since I installed Norton security suite. I booted it last night and ran a virus scan, got up this am to see my screen saver running but no response to attempts to awaken the computer. This is now each time I reboot. Any thoughts?
