Configuration Management

I’m a change manager wishing to become more technical and interested in Configuration Management. What kind of training would I need to enter this arena? My current function is non-technical, I facilitate change meetings, approve and schedule changes across all environments (UNIX, MVS mainframe, NT, INTEL, SunSolaris, etc.) within my current organization. Would the first step be to learn UNIX, or NT, or MVS, and then a software tool like Clear Case or PVSCS?
