connecting to shares on Windows XP

by jroehl . Updated 21 years, 2 months ago

I have a windows workgroup containing one server running Windows 2000 sever, about 12 pcs running Windows XP Pro and 2 pcs running Windows 2000 Pro. They all connect to a Linksys router that is handling DHCP for all of the pcs. The server and three laser printers have static IP addresses assigned. The server is used for file and printer sharing – it controls print queues for the printers and also houses a shared directory where users place files they wish to share with others on the network, along with one network application.

My problem is – all of the pcs can map a drive to the shared directory on the server without a problem, can print on all of the laser printers, and use the networked application. But things are strange when I try to map drives from the server to shares on some of the pcs – required for doing backups with the server’s internal tape drive.

From the server I can map drives to the 2 pcs with win2k pro. I can also map drives to 2 of the pcs with XP pro. But I get error 1385 whenver I try to map drives to the remaining xp pro pcs. It is driving me crazy that I cannot find what is different with the 2 different xp pro pcs.

I have gone into the local security policy on each pc to verify that the user name I use when mapping the drive has permission to access the computer through the network. I’ve tried more than one user name but that didn’t make any difference.

I really need some assistance before we lose a drive on one of the xp pro pcs and don’t have a backup.
