Controling Programs That Load @ Startup

It was wasy in Other versions of Windows to find and eliminate programs that loaded at startup. However I have not been able to determine it yet in Windows XP. I have a couple of programs that are loading at startup that I would like to eliminate. I’m not even sure why they are loading. They open up a Window on the desk top and I’m forced to close it. One appears to be a very limited Windows Explorer, it only shows 2 folders.
