Copying XP boot partition to new drive

I am having a problem booting from a newly copied to XP partition from an existing XP Home partition. I have used Partition Magic and another app to create an image and write it on another partition. But each time it just has the initial splash screen with moving blue runner showing it booting, and gets cut short, then goes blank and pops open the welcome blue screen with on the small XP logo, the same one as when it is shutting down, without the works “Saving your settings” or “Shutting down”. Please help. I want to try and save the installed apps for my son is why I am doing this.
