Dell Laptop/Monitor

I have a Dell Inspiron 5566 Laptop, and was given a Dell monitor. But I cannot seem to get the image on the monitor. The monitor allows for either VGA, DP or HDMI set up and came with the appropriate cords, but none of the cords has USB attachment and the laptop is not compatible with VGA DP or HDMI. I bought a VGA to USB adapter, but that is not working either. Any ideas?
