Desktop Icons and exe’s changed to win default and .lnk

For some unknown reason all .exe files are changed to .lnk files. When you click on a file or change it back to .exe you get the message “Windows cannot open this file”. Cannot access regedit, msconfig, c: prompt or run any programs. Has anyone seen this before and can tell me how to fix it?
