Difference between Extended and Standard on msc

When one opens the services or the group policy editor the details on the right handed pane always on the Extended mode. It is annoying. I always select Standard to see more. It is a waste of space on the left-handed side of the right handed pane. I can’t see it make any difference. I wonder.

Also I remember there was a way to change in the registry on XP so it is always on Standard mode but I can’t remember the details. I would like to try it on my Windows 7. It would be nice if I can be reminded.
