DNS on WIN9x. very expensive problem!

by wkoch7 . Updated 25 years, 8 months ago

A PC in a LAN outside wants to connected to an Extranet (let’s say extranet.com)
via a phone/ISDN maybe VPN router.
The Extranet has a DNS server (dns.extranet.com) to
resolve the hostnames in the extranet.
I enter the router as gateway and DNS server into the TCP/IP settings.

Now every call to any host in the PC’s LAN causes a phone call to the DNS server of the extranet, though the host is never in the extranet.
1. If a user specifies a hostname or url, which is not known in the LAN or mispelled, the line goes up.
2. If there is MS Networking installed, MS Networking will query the DNS every 15 minutes, though there is nothing interesting behind the extranet DNS server for MS Networking. This makes 2880 calls per month without any value.

CAN I set up the DNS on the PC in a way, that the DNS behind the router is ignored, if the queried host is NOT in the domain extranet.com.
