Does anyone use Adobe Livecycle? Is it worth learning?

I’ve been creating basic interactive PDFs using Acrobat Pro but I would like to insert more functionality into the forms like hooking it up to a simple database where the answers upon submission are saved to a database/spreadsheet. Is this something that is only possible with Adobe Livecycle? It looks quite cumbersome to learn.
