Dual screen fiasco

I have a Dell Vostro 3550 laptop running Windows 10 Pro. Here’s the issue. If I use the generic video driver, the laptop screen is fine, but can’t clone it to my projector. If I update the video drivers (Intel HD 3000), my laptop screen disappears and is only on my projector (HDMI). As a test, I plugged a monitor into the VGA port and voila, the video is there too…but not on my main screen. I tried clone, extend, only PC and only 2nd screen…no good. Can someone please help???
