Dump Files

Can anyone help me with Windows 7 and .dmp files.

I have been asked by a software manufacturer to send them the latest dump file. That is not a problem, but when I wanted to look at it, I found Windows could not open it. I see there are various people out there ready to provide the means, but with strings I do not want.
