Email links on Firefox pages

I encounter articles now and then that I would like to send to friends but encounter a problem when trying to do so; I click the email link and then I have to wait while Internet Explorer opens. I have not been able to stop this from occurring and it is quite frustrating. I have disabled IE, but that doesn’t stop it from opening, just stops it from connecting to the internet. What can I do to prevent this?
