Excel Quirk?

In a large Excel spreadsheet, why does the value 4500 change to 2000? If I type 4,500 the value displays 4500. If I type 4500, the value displays 2000. I checked the formatting of the cell and it is correct.
Is there a bug in Excel that causes thisin large spreadsheets?
