Exchange pop3 authentication

Must an Exchange server be a PDC/BDC to be able to authenticate a remote POP3 Outlook client. If not how can Authentication be done useing a stand alone Exchange server?
What are the mail settings on the Outlook client? Any settings needed on the server besides the original default settings?
