external hard disk data lost

since last week my PC affected by virus and later i removed all the virus . after all threats are gone my PC is fine without any errors. when i browse my external hard disk its showing the data ( i.e 310gb free out of 938gb ) but when i click it none of my files exist. should i format my External hard disk? or can i find any solution to get my data back?
