File sharing doesn’t respond

I have XP, and file sharing is on. However, I can’t share any files or folders. When I right click on the file/folder that I want to share, then go to sharing and security or properties, it doesn’t do anything. Even when I open the folder and then click “share this folder” it still doesn’t respond. It did work in the past, but not now.
