Firefox add-ins: More powerful than a locomotive, able to leap….

Firefox add-ins can do some really cool stuff:

For average joe-the-surfer users, these plug-ins are very useful:

1) WOT
Web of trust WOT: evaluate search results to keep you away from malware and phony sites.
Similar add-ins are Finjan Secure Browsing and LinkScanner Lite. WOT is a little more invasive but a lot more protective than Finjan or LinkScanner.

2) Flash-block
Allows you to choose to run flash animation or not.

3) PDF download
Allows you to choose whether to download, view online, or render a pdf in html.

4) NoScript
Caution: This is a ‘love-hate’ add-in. It will break every web page you visit. But it will also prevent every drive-by spyware/virus infection.

Now for the uuber geeks:

If you do app development, test web apps, do security testing, or perform pen testing Firefox can do some amaaazing things with:

1)TamperData
2)FireBug
3)GreaseMonkey
4)HackBar
5)JSView
6)ChickenFoot
7)InspectThis
8)SpiderZilla
9)User agent switcher
10)View Cookies
11)Web developer
12)XSS me

With the above add-ins you can slice/dice/puree about any web site in any way you like.

Very good article on using Chickenfoot/FireBug.

And two add-ins that are purely eye candy:

1) TabEffect: while it can be flaky, it makes tab switching a 3D mac-like thing.

2) CoolIris: if you have not seen CoolIris, go see it. It makes surfing the web a cool 3D virtual-world thing. It also can be a little flaky since CoolIris previews are enabled by default.
