Floppy drive wont work on my 486

by Ethan Weiberg . Updated 16 hours, 1 minute ago

I am new to retro computers, and I got a 486 a couple weeks ago. Everything worked fine at first, but now my floppy drive does not work. BIOS is set up for a 1.44mb, 3.5 in drive which is what I have. The floppy drive is pinned correctly and connected to the board correctly. At first when the issue started it would only work in Win95 but not in DOS, and would not even work very well in Windows (stuck in a loop reading the disk). Then it stopped working completely. Sometimes when I would boot it worked, other times it wouldn’t. The LED wasn’t even lighting up at all, motor wouldn’t spin. I swapped the cable with one from a different PC and the LED did light up and I was able to copy a file from a floppy disk to the hard drive, but now it doesn’t work again. I have tried 3 different floppy drives, none of them will light up and none will work.

I am new to this and I am not very knowledgable.
