Getting files back from an external hard drive

I have mistakenly formatted my external hard drive from Mac OS Extended to e-fat. So I lost all the data that was on the Mac OS Extended. I was thinking I was using a different external drive. When I was in e-fat mode i downloaded a load of files onto it. I’ve since deleted the e-fat files and gone back to Mac OS Extended. The question is is there any way to get the original files back that were on the Mac OS Extended?
