Hidden files

I am not able to open the hidden files that I have hidden as they were my personal files. I am using Windows XP SP2. I have tried using the Tools menu and Folder options under that. Initially I was able to open these hidden files by using above mentioned steps. Please help. Is it because of virus? I am using Avira free antivirus software.
