How do I recover a username and password?

I was fixing my cousin’s Compaq mini 110, because it got a virus and wouldn’t come on. I downloaded the HP recovery and to my surprise it was a Linux operating system, even though I chose XP. She had no problem using the operating system, However, she has forgotten her username and password. How do I recover it from this system? Haven’t had much practice on this operating system.
