how do I set up a virtual computer to recognize real input sources

I created a virtual computer using the windows 8 client-v . When trying to upload date from real disk sources (hard drive and thumb drive) I could not get the virtual system to recognize the drive sources. Is it possible to get the virtual system to recognize other inputs than the DVD, from which I loaded my operating system?
