how do i speed up printing in NT/98 envi

i’ve just been assigned to a rather small NT4.0 SP5 network (12 users) running DHCP. when the users print to an HP5 printer that is setup through a HP jetdirect 500X and shared from the server, it can take up to 20 minutes for the one page job to print! i can see it sitting in the queue but it just won’t start printing!! how can i make the server begin the process quicker? like as soon as it arives in the queue? spooling is setup.
