How printer recogns no. of pages in Doc.

Hello

I want to Know how does printer know numbers of Total Pages to Print.

Also Please explain Procedure which computer and printer Follow to communicate with each other to do the printing Job.
i.e. is this an O.S. feature or Printer Software.
