Icons do not appear on desktop

A friend says she tried to install Internet Explorer 6 but when she restarted her computer no Icons appeared on desktop (i don’t know if she had installation problems). She then tried to use the restore disk and that did not make the Icons appear on the desktop.
Do I need to uninstall Internet Explorer 6 and re-install Internet Explorer 6?
