Including File Content as an XML doc

Has anyone tried to include a file content(e.g. source file/pdf) as a
part of an XML instance document (binary format)?

We are currently developing a interface between two system using a XML file to be sent out
as a JMS message. As a part ofthe metadata, we would also like to include a file’s content as a part of the XML content.
