Information on Work Flow Models?

I used to work for a company where Work Flow Models were employed — A system whereby each unit of work is set up on a schedule and the flow of steps that picked up the unit was table-driven. Basically the flow-chart that described the system was mapped out on tables including each, step, their possible resolutions, and where the work should go next.
My question is, does anyone know where I can get more information on this solution?
I could build it from memory but I’d like to do it right.
