Install new laptop drive, access all data on old drive by USB?

Hi, I searched but was not able to find, my apologies if it’s there.

I’m 2 years since reformatting, same with backing up data. My file system is a mess.

Windows XP home spII on a Dell Latitude D505 w/7200 rpm HDD. Everything is running fine except the usual slowing down from bloat. I run AVG, Adaware, defrag, online virus scans, everything short of the fresh install it needs. Latest IE and Firefox [primary].

I have all install discs, drivers saved, etc. I have a good used spare drive [known use history, less than half of mine] with same specs as mine. I also have Norton systemworks 2003.

Rather than backing up a messy pile of data or ghosting this bloat, if I were to swap out and do fresh install on spare drive, could I then access all my data on the original drive through a USB external case?

Envisioning being able to just drag and drop what files I want from the original drive through USB then reformat it as a fresh spare.

thank you, Matt
