I was wondering if somebody can tell me how to ping an all-numbers Netbios name like “95” or “98”. One of my managers named 100 Windows 95 and 98 machines, using the convention 951 for Windows 95 machine 1, 952 for Windows 95 machine 2..etc, thinking it is intuitive naming style, and of course, while I was on a trip 🙁
Thank god she left the servers and all the NT workstations alone. Well, she hasn’t gone that far yet.
Now, the question is how do I ping all these machines? Somebody in Usenet NT admin NG suggested pinging by DNS name. That was cute. But we don’t have the DNS servers, our ISP maintains it. We only have one Internet address that can be seen on the net which is our proxy server. So, the domain name of all the internal machines is left blank with the DNS host name the same as Netbios name. Can somebody help? Well the last resort might be to go and rename those machines back to something else — manually :((
