Internet access over ethernet

I’ve just acquired a used laptop and am having trouble connecting to the internet over an ethernet connection using my PC as a host. I have a good connection between the two machines and can share files but when I open IE or Firefox, I can’t connect to the web. Do I need to tell the browser where to find the connection?
Both machines use XP SP3
