Internet explorer 6 does not give version number

I have a XP sp2 pc. When I open internet explorer and go to Help > About Internet Explorer no version number, product ID or update version information is displayed.

I want to reinstall windows 6, but the I get a message saying more recent version of IE already installed.

What might the problem be?
