Internet Explorer will not work

Computer was infected with a virus recently. The virus was saying you needed to purchase this Antisoft virus software before you could access the internet. Since I could not get to the internet I just left the computer alone for a week or two. Now I am able to get on the internet via AOL but not internet explorer. Have tried system restore and that is not working. I have tried reinstalling IE and that is not working. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I would greatly appreciate it.
