Hi all:
I just signed up with US WEST as my dial-up ISP. I’m an Internet developer, so I need a reliable Internet connection, but I’m definately no hardware guru. I have been having problems getting US WEST’s dial-up number to answer. My modem would call and call and would get no response. I called their tech support and they said my modem was on their “problem” list. I have a Conexant SoftK56 Data, Fax, Speakerphone PCI Modem #2. The tech support people had me add this line to the “extra settings” field under the advanced connection setting for my modem: +MS=V34. I take that to mean that my modem is emulating a V34 type, which has a top connection speed of around 34,000 bps? Adding this info now means that I can connect ok, although only at 28,800 bps. My question is:
1). Should I get a new ISP?
2). How does their server even know what kind of modem I have before it picks up the incoming call?
3). My old ISP had no problems with my modem and I got connection speeds of about 44,000 bps. Why
