issues with windows xp service pack 2

I just installed a micro-star AMD motherboard in my pc when i try to update to service pack 2 the pc will pass the post screen and you see the white power bar scroll across the bottom of the screen an the windows defaults to safe mode insatll screen, the only way i can get the pc back is to load safe mode and uninstall srevice pack 2
