As an IT professional, I like to keep my resume updated, and when I’m looking for a new job, I like to make sure it’s available for people to see on the popular job search sites. To be brief, my current contract is coming to end, and my company doesn’t have another job for me, so I made my resume available. I was quite happy to get almost immediate responses to my resume. Then I started to get those calls and emails that I’m sure many of us have gotten a few times in the past years, ones made by people who obviously don’t care about your qualifications, or what your looking for, because they saw a person looking for a job,so that person just must be happy to get ANY job offer, right? That’s right, the people who would like to offer you a job as a Sales or Account manager, or even managing the new local office of the Sales team, at a pay cut compared to what your job profile says online.
Now, if I wanted to switch Careers, I most certainly would not have a resume out that specifically states that I am looking for an IT Security Administration position, nor would I list my job experiences in that field. One local company in particular has sent me several emails, from the same person, really wanting to talk to me about the exciting Sales opportunities they have, even though I have politely replied that I am not interested in switching careers.
Am I the only one who gets these? I think not from the talk with other IT people I have had recently. This is like a slightly more intelligent version of SPAM imho. Almost as bad are the companies that call up and want to know if you would be interested in an entry level desktop support position they have, as your resume clearly indicates you have done that in the past. If my job profile says that I am looking for a local company, and a certain range salary, calling me up and ignoring those things is waste of both my time and the caller’s. I am willing to give a bit of leeway to a tech recruiter who calls me up and says they see from my resume that I would be a good candidate for this position they have, and then during the course of the conversation they ask if I have experience with hardware or software that is clearly listed on my resume. Usually they just have so much going on that I can understand not remembering something they have read or skim read before calling me.
Is it just me? Do you think that companies that don’t really bother to see what kind of job you are after, what experience you have or anything that you have spent the time to fill out on the job sites are just wasting time and email? A form of head hunting, a type of intellectual SPAM, that in a way insults you by hinting that your current qualifications, experience and talents aren’t really as important to them as getting a warm body signed up for a slot they need to fill. I’d be interested in hearing what other IT professionals think. I shall now step down from my soap box…….
