Joining a domain with XP home edition

I’m trying to join a domain with a pc running XP home edition. Anytime I try to join, it comes up with an error message saying a domain controller for the domain can not be contacted. This is inspite my making sure that the DNS address and WINS address correspond to that of the Domain. Is there anything else I should be doing?
