Leaving the job to finish my degree

I have been pursuing my undergraduate degree over the last four years and my job duties prevent me from consistently attending class and assignments, even the online classes. I am considering stepping down from my role as IT Supervisor to finish my education but I have concerns about being able to explain my absence from this industry upon graduating and I wonder if this would be seen as negative. What are some of your experiences with this scenario?
